Somerset Co. Pa. * Died Feb. 18, 1913 in Moundsville, Marshall Co. W. Va. * Private Co. B 1st West Virginia Cavalry * Promoted to Corporal * In Jan. 1862 he was in hospital at Cumberland, Md. for lung fever * June 8, 1862 promoted to Sergeant in Co. E 6th West Virginia Cavalry * He received a shell wound to the head. * July 18, 1862 he had his left leg broken by a horse falling on it. He was in the hospital at Washington and Baltimore for 4 months * Discharged Dec. 26, 1862 * Re-enlisted Jan. 15, 1864 at Wheeling, W. Va. in Co. E 6th W. Va. Cavalry * Captured Nov. 28, 1864 at New Creek, held at Libby and Pemberton prisons for 4 months. * Paroled and exchanged. * Detailed as Orderly for Gen. Shields for a short time. * Detailed as detective at Julesburg Col. for one month. * At the close of the war his regiment was ordered west and while there was in 3 pitched battles with the Indians. * Acted as special scout a short time against the Indians in Colorado. * Discharged May 29, 1866 * He was a brother of Jefferson Younkin * Invalid Pension: Applied Jan. 8, 1872 and May 25, 1910, Application #171337, Certificate #118187; Widow Pension: Applied Mar. 5, 1913, Application #1003182, Certificate #769425 SOURCE: * Presidents, Soldiers, Statesmen by H.
