Griffith of Meyersdale, Apparently Not to Blame for Tragedy Jean Benford, aged 10 years, of 304 Wood Street, Johnstown, met death at 4:45 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, a short distance from his home, as the result of his sled colliding with a truck operated by Harvey L. Griffith, a Meyersdale huckster. Griffith was driving his truck in-bound on Wood Street when the Benford boy coasted out of an alley, his sled colliding with the truck. The lad suffered a fracture of the skull. The boy was rushed in the police patrol to Memorial Hospital, but was pronounced dead upon arrival. Griffith was released upon his own recognizance. He told police that he was operating his truck in second gear at the time and stopped it about 10 feet from where the boy was struck. Another boy who coasted out of the alley ahead of the Benford boy had a narrow escape from colliding with the truck. Meyersdale Republican, December 15, 1932
