Halterman and a boy companion, Wilmer Pifer, were on their way to a store at Henry. Wanting to hunt along the way the lad took a gun from his home against the protest of his mother. The gun was loaded and he had fired one of the two charges it contained at a rabbit and then attempted to climb upon a rock to observe the course the rabbit took, the hammer of the gun struck against the rock as he was drawing it toward him and exploded the second charge, the shot striking him in the head and killing him instantly. The youth was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Halterman, of near Henry. Their daughter was drowned a number of years ago when she fell into the Potomac River near her home.
