MARIETTA Fatally Injured on Fishing Trip G. R. Marietta of Connellsville Found Dead as Result of Fall Near Kooser Run Somerset County police and Mrs. Emily Fluck, the County Coroner, are satisfied that George R. Marietta, aged 47, proprietor of a Connellsville confectionary store, who was found dead along Kooser Run, was the victim of an accident. Marietta, who had been on a fishing trip with his son in the vicinity of Bakersville, had been missing since Wednesday, when he failed to meet his son at their car at dusk, as arranged. After conducting a fruitless search for his father on Wednesday night, the son went to Somerset and obtained the aid of the police. With the discovery of the body, Sheriff Clifford Saylor, County Detective Fred Hare and Sergt. Vincent F. Bunch, in charge of the Somerset sub-station of the State Police, conducted a thorough investigation to determine whether Marietta had met with foul play. The body was found about 40 feet from Kooser Run and at the bottom of an embankment about 12 feet high. It is believed that Marietta slipped and fell over the embankment, his head striking a rock and causing a fracture of the skull and a fracture of the left shoulder. After sustaining the injuries the police believe that Marietta regained his faculties sufficiently to crawl a short distance before he collapsed and died. Marietta's shoe soles bore evidence that he had walked through grass after leaving the trout stream. At the top of the embankment a short distance from where the body was found, imprints in the earth indicated that Marietta had slipped and fallen. After the investigation of the police and the Coroner, the body was removed to Somerset and was later taken to Marietta's home in Connellsville. Marietta was a son of the late Rockwell Marietta, the first Mayor of Connellsville. He owned a cottage a short distance southwest of Bakersville and had fished in the streams of Laurel Hill for many years. Surviving are his wife and a son, Van Marietta, the latter having been with his father a short time before he was killed. Meyersdale Republican, May 12, 1932
