Hanna, State policeman, and Samuel A. Kent, a 14-year-old boy, were seriously wounded as the result of the aged farmer using a gun to prevent trespassing on his land by hunters. Corp. William R. Hanna is the State policeman injured. One bullet pierced his windpipe, threatening him with congestion of the lungs from the blood flow. Young Kent, a member of the hunting party, was struck in the hip when Lynch fired on the hunters. After shooting Kent, Lynch barricaded himself in his home. Chief of Police John Perri of Belle Vernon, called the State Police when Lynch answered an order to surrender with a threat to kill the first man who invaded his home. Corporal Hanna and Privates Joseph Hoffer and Howard O'Donnell answered the police chief's call for aid. Lynch again refused to surrender. The State Police threw a tear-gas bomb through a window. Lynch came out, firing. One of his shots struck Hanna in the neck, piercing his windpipe. The troopers returned the fire. Lynch fell and died before surgical aid could reach him. Corporal Hanna had been cited for bravery in 1929. He was formerly in charge of the State Police sub-station at Altoona. Meyersdale Republican, November 17, 1932
