Mr. Alexander was born in Frederick County, Md., May 16, 1855, and came to the Salisbury community 49 years ago, locating first in the village of West Salisbury. He passed out of this life at the age of 77 years, 1 month and 7 days. His death was due to heart disease and other complications, from which he had been suffering more or less during the last few years. During most of the active years of his life he followed coal mining as an occupation, and was one of the most expert miners that ever wielded a pick in the Salisbury-Elk Lick region. In his prime he was a man of herculean strength, but never used it to the detriment of others. He was ever a man of a friendly and kindly disposition, and his big-heartedness was in proportion to his fine physique and large stature. Few men had a better knack of making and retaining friends, and in addition to his many other good qualities, he was a kind and devoted father and husband. Almost 58 years ago he wedded Miss Agnes Cochrane, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Cochrane. The father of his bride was at that time a well-known coal operator in the Salisbury region, and for some years thereafter. Mr. Alexander is survived by his wife and by seven of the nine children born to them, and also by five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The surviving children are Mrs. Charlotte Matthews, of Van Meter, Pa.; Aleda, wife of Mahlon Martin, of Rowlesburg, W.Va.; William and Charles F., of Racine, Wis.; Mrs. Bella Tenney, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; Margaret, wife of Harry Brooks, of Rowlesburg, W.Va., and Russell, at home. The funeral service was conducted at the family residence, Sunday, June 26, by Rev. A. M. Wright, pastor of the Salisbury Reformed Church, of which the deceased had been a member. He was also a member of the Knights of Pythias and the Improved Order of Red Men. The local lodges of those two orders participated in the burial rites, as did also the Pythian Sisters. The floral tributes were many and very beautiful, and the obsequies were attended by a large number of relatives, acquaintances and friends. Interment was made in the Salisbury I.O.O.F. Cemetery, under the direction of Funeral Director W. C. Price of Meyersdale. Among those from a distance who attended the funeral, were Mrs. Margaret Jeffery, of Struthers, Ohio; Robert Mull, of Jerome; Archie Cochrane, of Meyersdale; Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Campbell, and Mrs. Jennie MacDonald, of Piedmont, W.Va.; Mr. and Mrs. John Sluss and grandson, John Getty, of Morgantown, W.Va.; Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Sluss, Mr. and Mrs. James Smith, Mr. and Mrs. John Getz, Mrs. Jane Kalbaugh and Thomas Alexander, of Frostburg, Md.; Mr. and Mrs. Morgan Harris of Cumberland, Md.; John and Lewis Harris, Westernport, Md.; Mr. and Mrs. James Bowles, of Barton, Md.; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Ehman, sons Harry and Walter, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; Mr. and Mrs. Wilford Rodgers, of Van Meter, Pa.
