He was born October 20, 1922, in Escalante, Utah, the son of the late Lafayette P. and Sarah M. Shurtz Alvey. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Army Air Corps with the 417th Bomb Group where he received the Purple Heart in the Pacific Theater. He worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1939 until 1941 building Zion and Bryce National Parks in Utah. He worked in the US Postal Service until his retirement. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and attended the Hagerstown Church of the Brethren. He is survived by his wife Norma J. Herwig-Alvey of 58 years; daughter, Shauna Ansel; son, Bradley W. Alvey; sisters: Maletta Butler, Richfield, Utah; Cuma Demas, Sandy, Utah; two granddaughters. He was preceded in death by sisters: Elva Barney, Geneva Christianson and Lilly Alvey; brothers: Percell, Ordell, Quince and Otto Alvey. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. (today) Thursday, March 25, at Osborne Funeral Home, Williamsport, with the Rev. Loyal H. Vanderveer officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. (today) Thursday, March 25, at Union Cemetery, Meyersdale, with the Rev. Eric Shaulis officiating. The family received friends at the funeral home Wednesday evening March 24. The funeral home was open Wednesday after 9 a.m. for the convenience of the family and friends.
