Dia, one of the oldest and best known residents of Meyersdale, received word this week of the death of his last surviving sister, Mrs. Johanna Appel, in Covington, Ky., whose obituary is given by one of the Covington papers, as follows: Mrs. Joanna Dia Appel, 83 years old, 630 Garrard Street, Covington, widely known Covington milliner, died at her home yesterday, following a lingering illness. Mrs. Appel and her deceased husband, August Appel, were engaged in the millinery business in Covington for 66 years. Mr. and Mrs. Appel conducted the store at Eleventh Street and Madison Avenue for many years, and later moved to 540 Madison Avenue. Mrs. Appel was born in Hanover, Germany, and removed to this country when a child. She had resided at the Garrard Street address for more than 10 years. Surviving Mrs. Appel are one son, William A. Appel, one daughter, Mrs. Daniel T. McLaren, and two brothers, Christian Dia, Meyersdale, Pa., and Ernest Dia, Ludlow. Funeral services at the residence tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Frederick E. Ross, pastor of the Union Methodist Episcopal Church, Covington, officiating. Burial in Highland Cemetery. Meyersdale Republican, May 12, 1932
