ARNOLD Miss Annie Sloane Arnold, former district court clerk and deputy clerk for many years, died at 5:30 p.m. Christmas day at her home, in Parsons, Kansas. Miss Arnold, who was widely known in the county, had been in ill health five years, and for the last 15 months had been bedfast following a stroke. Born in Somerset County, Pa., she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Arnold. When she was a small child the family moved to Ashland, Ohio, where she was reared to young womanhood and where she was graduated from Ashland College. In 1884 she came with her family to Labette County. The Arnolds settled on a farm 12 miles southeast of Parsons near Montana. For several years Miss Arnold taught at the Pleasant Valley school near their home. Then she went to Dennison, Tex., where she served as school principal and teacher for seven years. She also taught several years at McAlester, Ok. Returning to Kansas, she was elected county superintendent of schools in 1898 and served one term. She was appointed deputy clerk of the court at the time a second division of the Labette County Court was created in 1907 and served in that capacity until 1919 when she was elected clerk of the court and served two terms. Some time later she served for a while temporarily as deputy. For many years Miss Arnold was active in community and county affairs. She was modest and retiring, but had a great many friends who esteemed her very highly and respected her for her high principles and ability. Through the years she had a great influence on the lives of a great many young people. As a young woman she joined the United Brethren Church, and she was deeply religious. For a number of years she taught in Sunday School in the Montana neighborhood. Miss Arnold is survived by three sisters, Miss Mary E. Arnold of the home, Mrs. Edwin Potts, Independence, and Mrs. W. J. VanMeter, Parsons, and two brothers, Richard P. Arnold, Ely, Nev., and George S. Arnold, Beatrice, Nebr. Funeral services were held at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Martin Funeral Home, conducted by Dr. John Luke Gehman of the Presbyterian church; burial in the family lot in Oakwood Cemetery. The Republican is indebted to Miss Arnold's brother-in-law, Ed S. Miller, of Omaha, Nebr., for the above obituary taken from a Parsons, Kansas, newspaper. Miss Arnold's mother was a sister of the late Mrs. Jacob W. Peck of Fairfield Farm, near Meyersdale. Miss Arnold was, therefore, a first cousin of the Peck sisters and brothers of Fairfield Farm. She was a highly esteemed friend of the senior editor of this newspaper for many years, and was well known by many readers of The Republican. Meyersdale Republican, January 6, 1944
