BAER [photo] Gene Baer, 58, a former resident of Meyersdale, died suddenly of a massive heart attack on March 26, 1998, at his home in Baltimore, Md. Baer was born July 25, 1939, in Meyersdale. He moved to Baltimore after graduating from Meyersdale Joint High School in 1958. He was employed by Eastern Stainless Steel for 40 years, 20 of which he was a truck driver. The last 10 years of his career he worked in the steel mill's bar yard. He also worked occasionally at Bauer Trucking. Baer was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He also enjoyed deer hunting, spending weekends at the family's property in Hancock, Md., and tinkering with old cars. He even built a 1952 MG kit car not once, but twice. He was planning his retirement and was looking forward to spending his golden years driving his own rig. Baer was a member of Edgemere Bible Church on Ross Avenue in Edgemere. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Deidra (nee Winkler); two daughters: Gwendolyn Lisa Newport of Ridgely, Md., and Melissa Jean Bauer of Lodge Forest, Md.; two granddaughters: Lauren Newport and Allyson Bauer, and four grandsons: Ben, Brooks and Tyler Newport and T.J. Bauer. He is also survived by his step-mother, Shirley Baer of Fort Howard; and three sisters: Brenda J. Cochran of Rosedale; and Ruth Elaine Baer and Glenda L. Sigler, both of Fort Howard. He also leaves behind sons-in-law Mickey Newport and Earl Bauer, several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews. He will be truly missed by his father-in-law and friend, Paul C. Winkler of Hancock. Baer was predeceased by his father, Glenn S. Baer. Gene never met a stranger and will be dearly missed by many friends and relatives. He was loved by everyone. Deidra, Gwen and Missy were so fortunate to have a husband and father like Gene, because he was the best husband and father anyone could ever hope for. The family appreciates the acts of kindness shown during their loss. Services were held at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home on Sunday, March 29. Pastor Earl E. Shiflett officiated.
