Born Nov. 26, 1898, in Maysville, W.Va., the third child of Benjamin G. and Mary (Smith) Roby. She was married in 1923 to William J. Baer Sr., who died in 1992. She was also preceded in death by son William Baer Jr., one brother, two half-sisters, and two grandchildren. She is survived by children, Jacqueline Coffroth of Sacramento, Calif., Betty L. Baer, PhD., of Green Bay, Wis., Richard R. Baer, married to Joan Custer of Osage, La., and Thomas L. Baer, married to Dorothy Lape, with whom she lived on the family farm in Somerset; daughter-in-law, Ruth Baer of Bedford; 16 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; 1 niece; 9 great-nieces; and several cousins. She was a graduate of the Western Maryland School of Nursing and worked as an industrial nurse at the Celanese Corp. before moving to Somerset to take over the family farm in 1924. She continued nursing at Somerset Hospital and many family homes, having cared for as many as three generations of people in several families. Her devotion to her children and love of nursing led to the admiration and love of her neighbors, most of whom she cared for. She had a keen sense of the need for higher education for those of her children desiring it. She and her husband also raised a foster son after their own children were raised. She was a long-time member of the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Lavansville and was a member of the Forbes Road Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Friends received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Miller Funeral Home, Somerset. A service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church where the family will receive friends one hour prior to service, Pastor Edward Ebersole officiating. Interment Somerset County Memorial Park.
