Baer died at the home of his son-in-law, Wilson Rhoads, Friday, March 14th, lacking two months of being 98 years old. His death was hastened by a fall, February 18th, when his hip was broken and he was bedfast from that time until his death. He was born in Brothersvalley Township, May 19, 1849, the third son of Daniel and Eliza Deal Baer. At the time of his birth Zachary Taylor was president and Abraham Lincoln had served one term in Congress in Washington. Young Peter attended school in Brothersvalley Township and helped his father on the farm. In 1874 he married Harriet Judy, who died twelve years ago. In 1877, he bought his father's farm of 133 acres which contains a fine sugar camp. Here he lived until several years ago when he retired and made his home with his children. Mr. Baer was a staunch Republican, casting his first vote for U.S. Grant. Always a progressive man, he served for some time as road supervisor. He was a member of and deacon of Fritz's Lutheran Church. Surviving are the following children, all citizens of Somerset County: Mrs. Lillie Saler, Meyersdale; Mrs. Calvin McGuire, Rockwood; Mrs. Wilson Rhoads, Somerset, R.D.; Mrs. Frank Handwerk, Berlin; Peter L. Baer, Sand Patch; and Mrs. Ray Walker, Berlin. Four children preceded him in death. In his passing Somerset County has lost a sterling citizen. Funeral services were held Monday, March 17, at 2:30 p.m., in the Johnson Funeral Home with the Rev. Martin F. Foutz officiating. Interment in Fritz's cemetery. Meyersdale Republican, March 20, 1947
