Baker, and daughter of the late Henry and Sarah (Livengood) Yost, died at her home in Grantsville December 29th. Mrs. Baker was in failing health for several years, but bravely carried on her housekeeping tasks up to a few weeks before her death. She was born at Jones Mill, Westmoreland County, Pa., January 22, 1861. When she was still but a baby her parents moved from Jones Mill to Engle's Mill on Bear Creek, near Accident, Md., where her father, who was a miller by trade, operated the Engle Mill. A few years later he gave up the milling business to become a farmer, and moved to a farm near Accident. In the spring of 1871 the family moved to a larger and better farm three miles south of Grantsville, which Mr. and Mrs. Yost bought and upon which they lived until the end of their days. Miss Mary, the eldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Yost, lived in the parental home until her marriage to John W. Baker, son of Solomon Baker, a neighboring farmer, January 27, 1878, when she was but 17 years old. She proved a faithful wife and helpmate and devoted mother. Mr. and Mrs. Baker lived on a farm in the Maple Grove community, near their parental homes, until their children were grown up and able to shift for themselves, then retired to a cozy home in Grantsville to spend the sunset of their lives. Mrs. Baker is survived by her husband and the following named children: William P., Lloyd W., Eugene M., and Mrs. Sarah Winter, all of whom live in the Grantsville community; Norman E., of Salisbury, Pa., and Mrs. Mae Wagner, of Latrobe, Pa.; also by eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her oldest son, Henry Baker, who was an outstanding young businessman of Grantsville, died about 20 years ago. Two sons also died in infancy. She is also survived by two brothers, Peter H. Yost, of Grantsville, and Jeremiah L. Yost of Meyersdale, and one sister, Mrs. Clarence Foy of Accident. One brother, John H. Yost, for many years a prominent citizen and businessman of Roanoke, Va., died some years ago. Mrs. Baker was an inheritor of the sterling character of her German father and her Pennsylvania German mother, who were very upright, thrifty and God-fearing people. She was a quiet, unassuming little woman, never putting herself first, but always keeping the welfare of her family and community as her first consideration. Her family and the community have lost a real helper. She was a faithful member of the Maple Grove Church of the Brethren from her girlhood. The funeral services were held on Sunday morning in the Maple Grove Church, her pastor, Rev. J. E. Walls officiating, burial following in the Grantsville Cemetery. William Winterberg was the undertaker in charge. The funeral was largely attended by friends and relatives, among those from distant places being Misses Martha and Emma Yost, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wagner, E. S. Wagner, and Clarence Smith, all of Latrobe, Pa.; Harry Baker and family, of Mountain Lake, Md.; Prof. and Mrs. Henry Yost of Rogersville, Pa.; Mr. and Mrs. Foster Yost and Mrs. Clara Foy and daughter, Accident, Md.; Mr. and Mrs. Christian Baker, Uniontown, Pa.; Mrs. Sarah Yoder, Peter J. Livengood and Peter L. Livengood, Salisbury, Pa., and Wm. S. Livengood and J. E. Imler, of Meyersdale. Meyersdale Republican, January 5, 1933
