Baker, beloved by many to whom she was "Aunt Rachael," passed away in the Hazel McGilvery Hospital, Meyersdale, at 11:20 Wednesday morning, March 21, having been brought to the hospital on Tuesday, suffering from a broken leg. She had been an invalid for five years following a stroke, from which she had partially recovered, being able to direct her household work from a chair until recently. During her invalidism she was cared for by her husband, her sister, Miss Mattie Kendall, her niece, Mrs. Minnie Howsare, and other relatives and friends. She was a large and heavy woman, and while being helped to lie down on a couch at 11 o'clock, Monday morning, one of her legs was wrenched in such manner that it was broken above the knee. In order to have the fracture X-rayed and reduced, she was removed to the Hazel McGilvery Hospital on Tuesday, where she passed away on the following day. If Mrs. Baker had lived until April 16, she would have reached the age of 92 years, having been born April 16, 1853. She was the oldest daughter of John C. and Elizabeth (Miller) Kendall of Greenville Township. She lived her entire life in that township. In addition to her husband she is survived by three sisters, Mrs. John H. Rembold, Meyersdale R.D. 3; Mrs. John W. Baker, Crellin, Md., and Miss Mattie Kendall, for many years principal of a public school in Homestead, who since her retirement has lived with her brother-in-law and sister in the old Kendall homestead. All of Mrs. Baker's four brothers, preceded her in death. They were: John C., Samuel A., Jacob L. and U. S. Grant Kendall, all men of prominence. John C. was a school principal for many years. Samuel A. was the founder of the Meyersdale Republican and served two terms as a member of the Pennsylvania Assembly and seven terms as Congressman from this district, and for many years was in the lumber business in partnership with his brother, Jacob L. Kendall. Grant, the youngest of the family, was a lawyer and justice of the peace in Fairmont, W.Va., for many years. Funeral services will be held at the home Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. J. E. Gindlesperger officiating, with burial in the Hostetler Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are in charge of H. R. Konhaus, Meyersdale mortician. Meyersdale Republican, March 22, 1945
