Born in Meyersdale, he was a son of the late Herman and Emma (Werner) Baker. He graduated from Meyersdale High School in 1919 and from Pennsylvania State University in 1923, with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. Mr. Baker, was employed as an apprentice engineer with the Union Switch and Signal Co., Swissvale, for two years, after which he was employed by the Boston and Maine Railroad Co. and the Portland Terminal Co. for 45 years. He held numerous supervisory positions, including general manager and vice president of the Maine Central Railroad, before retiring. From 1970 to 1987 he was employed by XTRA, Inc., a company that leased locomotives, cars, semi-trailers for piggy back, and containers for railroad services. During his railroad career, he was active in various committees of several railroad organizations. He was also a member and officer of various associations and clubs. His wife, the former Marian Janice Hay, died previously. Mr. Baker is survived by two daughters: Tessibell Werner Dodge, St. Paul, Minn.; and Mrs. Gene (Elaine) Baker Taylor of Bolton, Mass.; a son, James Roy Baker of North Syracuse, N.Y.; a sister, Ada R. Sweitzer, Meyersdale; six grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Merle Maust. Interment, Riverside Cemetery, Cape Elizabeth, Maine.
