Balsley, 89, of 410 East Cedar Ave., a survivor of the Johnstown Flood in 1889, died at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Shawley Convalescent and Nursing Home, Youngstown, Pa. She was born Sept. 14, 1876, at Meyersdale, a daughter of the late William M. and Sarah Steele Ankeny, and spent most of her life in Connellsville. She was a member of Philip Freeman Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, and a charter member of the Historical and Genealogical Society of Somerset County, and was a direct descendant of Capt. Peter Ankeny, of the founders of Somerset. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Surviving are two sons, William A., with whom she made her home, and Thomas P. of Connellsville; a daughter, Mrs. Ella Louise Johns of Latrobe; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Miss Elizabeth I. Ankeny of Connellsville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel L., March 1, 1949, and two brothers and two sisters. The body will be at the Brooks funeral home after 3 p.m. today. The funeral service will be held there at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, with the Rev. H. Wahl Pfeifer officiating. Interment will be in Hill Grove Cemetery.
