He was born Aug.15, 1919, in Wells County, Ind., and resided in Anderson for 55 years. He is preceded in death by his parents, Winfield Scott and Margaret (Farr) Balsley; a son, Rex Lewis Balsley; son-in-law, Ken Grise; four sisters and three brothers. He is survived by his wife, whom he married March 13, 1947, Kathryne (Carson) Balsley; two sons, Richard Scott and wife, Jo Ann (Stahl) Balsley, Somerset; James David and wife, Janet Balsley, Westfield, Ind.; daughter, Celia Anne Grise, Greensburg; seven grandchildren, Megan Balsley, Mikol Balsley, Patrick Balsley, Nicholas Balsley, Laura Grise, Amy Grise and Diane Grise. Dick retired as a teacher from Anderson High School after 30 years of service and had taught at Roll High School in Blackford County for three years. He was a 1937 graduate of Van Buren High School and a 1948 graduate of Ball State Teacher's College. Dick served his country in the U.S. Army as a captain during World War II. He attended Bethany Christian Church, He was a member of the American Legion Post 368 in Van Buren, Third Division Society, Local OP No. 33, longtime member of the Anderson Federation of Teachers, Ball State Alumni and Four Freshman Society. Dick was the sponsor of the Anderson High School Class of 1955 and the Roll High School Class of 1950. He was the ticket manager at Anderson High School for more than 20 years. A special thank you to the staff at Countryside Manor. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, South Chapel, 200 W. 53rd St., Anderson, Ind., where a service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday. Robert Bell and Kent Stookey officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Anderson. Memorial contributions may be made to Anderson High School Scholarship Fund or Bethany Christian Church.
