Oct. 25, 2003. Born Feb. 11, 1911 in London, England. Preceded in death by his parents, William and Katherine Barkel; his first wife, Margaret and a granddaughter Michele McFadden. Survived by his wife, Carol, and twin daughters, Finnette (Mrs. Ralph Egolf, Somerset) and Fiona McFadden, Vestal, N.Y.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was a ship's officer and private pilot prior to World War II. During the war he was a pilot and flight commander with the Intruder Squadrons of the Royal Air Force Fighter Command. Following the war, he served British interests in Malaya, Africa and the Middle East before taking command of the British diplomatic yacht in the Mediterranean. He was a veteran of 18 small boat (under 30 feet) crossings of the Atlantic. There will be private memorial services with burial at sea. Daily American, October 27, 2003 [B0405]
