Born Sept. 15,1911, in Sipesville, the daughter of Samuel Milton and Valerie Ann (Miller) Berkey. At the age of four she went to live with Anna B. and Dr. Charles J. Hemminger, first in Rockwood then in Somerset. She is preceded in death by parents; husband, Ralph Elwood Barnett, who died April 1, 1990; brothers, Cloyd, Telford, Charles and Levi Berkey; and sister, Margaret Shaffer. Irene is sur- vived by two children, Mary Ann Hay and husband, Jeff, Golden, Colo.; and William B. Barnett, Milford, Conn.; two grandchildren, David Hay and wife, Becky, Golden; and Michael Hay, Los Angeles; and two great- grandchildren, Max and Linda Hay, Golden. Also sur- vived by brother, Harold Berkey and sister, Anna Mauer, both of Somerset. She graduated from Somerset High School in 1930 and from Hood College in 1934 with major in Home Economics, she taught Home Economics in Somerset for several years until her mar- riage to her husband, Ralph E. Barnett, in 1939. They cel- ebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1989 shortly before Ralph's death. For more than 20 years, she taught sewing to adult night school students and for a few years she taught nutrition, diet therapy and family living to practical nursing students in Somerset. She was an avid gardener all her life. Irene was a 65-year member of the Forbes Road Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, where she served as regent. She was a 50-year member of the Somerset Garden Club where she had served as president. She was a life member of the Somerset Historical Society and served as president for many years, also serving on the Ankney Square Association in Somerset. She was also a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Friends received one hour prior to service which will be held 4 p.m. Thursday May 10, 2007, at the Trinity Lutheran Chapel, Somerset, with the Rev. Linda J. McElroy officiating. Interment Somerset County Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her memory to Trinity Lutheran Church, 918 Tayman Ave., Somerset, PA 15501.
