Dr. John L. Barnhart, departed this life at her home, 3408 Edgewood Rd., Baltimore, Md., Monday, Nov. 28. The daughter of Dr. and Mrs. William Rupp, she was born in Berlin, Pa., Sept. 27, 1873. In her young womanhood she taught school in Meyersdale for five years. September 27, 1898, she was married to the Rev. John L. Barnhart in the chapel of the Theological Seminary of the Reformed Church, Lancaster, Pa., by her father, a professor at that institution. During the long ministry of her husband, for more than 45 years, she was very active in Sunday School and church, not only in her local congregations, but also in her denomination. For four years she was president of the Woman's Missionary Society of St. Paul's Classis of Pittsburgh Synod of the Reformed Church. After coming to Baltimore in 1910, she was the first acting president of the Woman's Missionary Society of Maryland Classis organized in 1914, and served as president three years. In 1931 she was elected president of the Woman's M.S. of the Synod of the Potomac, and filled that office three years. She became president of the W.M.S. of Baltimore-Washington Classis in 1938. Several times she was a delegate to General Synod's Missionary Society. Much of the time she was president of the society of her own congregation. Dr. and Mrs. Barnhart celebrated their Golden Wedding September 27, 1948. Besides her husband Mrs. Barnhart is survived by a daughter, Louise Gertrude, wife of Jesse Spangler, M.D., Kokomo, Ind.; a son, the Rev. William Rupp Barnhart, D.D., head of the department of Philosophy and Religion at Hood College; by six grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Viola R. Master, Allentown, Pa., and a brother, Col. Paul Rupp, San Antonio, Texas, a retired Army chaplain. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 8 p.m., in Messiah Evangelical and Reformed Church, Baltimore, of which her husband was pastor, the Rev. Frank K. Bostian, officiating. Interment in Union Cemetery at Greensburg, Pa., Thursday, at 4:45 p.m. The last time Mrs. Barnhart was in Meyersdale was May 12, 1946, when her husband preached at the dedication of the chimes of Amity Evangelical and Reformed Church.
