Born Dec. 14, 1916, in Somerset. Son of the late George Leroy and Flora Catherine (Lafferty) Barnhart. Also preceded in death by infant son, Richard Freeman Barnhart, and sister, Thelma A. Foust. Survived by wife, the former Dorothy Louise Griffith, to whom he was married 46 years, and these children: William G. "Pete" Barnhart and daughter-in-law, the former Wendy Lohr, Somerset; John D. Barnhart and daughter-in-law, the former Sherry Bell, Somerset RD 4, and Jane L. Barnhart, Somerset. Also two granddaughters, Lorie and Danielle Barnhart. Brother of Mrs. Mae Foust, Berlin RD 4; Miss A. Catherine Barnhart, Somerset, and Mrs. Joseph (Alma) Foreman, Tama, IA. He was a meat cutter for Berkey Locker Plant, retiring in 1979. A 1935 graduate of Somerset High School. Veteran of U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II. Member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Life member and a former chief of Somerset Volunteer Fire Department. Also member of Lodge 358, F&AM; Jaffa Shrine; Westmoreland Forest 77, Tall Cedars of Lebanon; Somerset VFW Post 554, and American Legion Post 181. He served as mayor of Somerset Borough from 1962-1974. Friends received from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home, Somerset. Service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with Rev. Robert L. Hoover Jr. officiating. Interment, Husband Cemetery. No viewing at the church. Somerset Volunteer Fire Department memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday and a Masonic service will be held at 7:15 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
