He was born in Reyoldsville Nov. 28, 1897, a son of the late John and Elenore (Neal) Bassett. Preceded in death by a daughter, Corrine, three brothers and four sisters. Survived by his wife, the former Martha E. Smith and these children: Mrs. Charles K. (Ilean) Bittner; Dover, N.H.; Mrs. Earl (Audrey) Winters of Somerset RD 5; Robert of Meyersdale; Mrs. William (Nancy) Payne of Oceanside, Calif.; Jack B. of Garrett, 16 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He was a brother of Mrs. Ada Hocking of Punxsutawney, Mrs. Elenore Black of Dubois, Mrs. Louise Jones, St. Benedict, Pa.; Mrs. Lillian Dowey, Tioga Falls, Ohio; William of Bakerton, Pa. The passing of Mr. Bassett broke a marriage of 53 years. He was a member of the Garrett Volunteer Fire Department. Friends will be received after 7 p.m. Monday in the Johnson and Son Funeral Home, Berlin where services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Paul E. Snyder officiating. Interment, Highland Cemetery, Garrett. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to the building fund for the Garrett United Methodist Church or the Cancer fund.
