Dr. C. P. Bastian Died at His Home in Altoona Last Friday BERLIN, Jan. 23 - Rev. Dr. McCall Piatt Bastian, better known locally as Rev. C. P. Bastian, pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Berlin from 1919 until his retirement from active ministry in 1942, died at his home in Altoona at 6:10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 18, after two weeks illness. He was aged 81 years, 11 months and 10 days when he passed away. News of his death saddened his former parishioners here and the people of this community generally, for Dr. Bastian was not only a popular and able minister of the Lutheran denomination, but a public spirited, genial and amiable citizen who made friends of all who knew him. He was an apt and witty speaker and was in much demand as an orator at social gatherings and public occasions where speeches were wont to be made. He was a lover of nature and ardent outdoors sportsman. As an angler for brook trout he had few peers in luring the speckled beauties to take the bait. He was born in White Deer Valley, in Central Pennsylvania, February 8, 1864, as son of John C. and Catherine (Moore) Bastian. He attended Susquehanna Missionary Institute and was graduated from Gettysburg College in 1894 and from Gettysburg Theological Seminary in 1903. From 1894 until 1900 he served as principal of the Muncy Normal School and in 1900 and 1901 was affiliated with the Emporium public schools. In 1903 he entered the ministry of the Lutheran Church. He served at Littlestown, Pa., until 1907, at Keyser, W.Va., from 1907 to 1912, at Charleroi, Pa., from 1912 until 1919 and at Berlin for the next 23 years. Surviving are his second wife, one son and two daughters, born to his first wife. They are Fred F. Bastian of Williamsport, Mrs. Ruth B. Richards and Kathryn V. Bastian, both of Philadelphia. He left also five grandchildren. Dr. Bastian was a charter member for 50 years of the Artisan organization at Muncy, a member of the Blair County ministerium of the Lutheran Church, a past president of the Central Pennsylvania Lutheran synod, and served as financial secretary of the organization for nine years. Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, in the Second Lutheran Church, Altoona. His body was interred at 1:00 p.m., Monday, in Williamsport. Memorial services in honor of Dr. Bastian, were held in connection with the regular morning service last Sunday morning in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Berlin, in which he had served so long and so ably. Dr. Bastian retired from the ministry in April 1942, after 41 years' service, and since had resided in Altoona. While located in Charleroi he lectured throughout the state on the subject "My boy and I." He received his degree of Doctor of Divinity from Susquehanna University. He was twice married, his first wife, the former Clemmie Folmer, died on Dec. 27, 1927, and in 1933, he married the former Blanche A. Harnish. Friends from Berlin attending funeral services for Dr. Bastian in Altoona were: Rev. Robert S. Nagle, Mrs. Nagle and sons, Thomas Golby, Harry Gindlesperger, Wm. McLuckie, Paul Pritz, Harry DeHaven, A. H. C. Dively, Ed Baldwin, Frank Ball, George Cote, Mr. and Mrs. W. J.
