In early childhood she was christened and confirmed in the English Lutheran Church. In 1867 she was married to Henry J. Folk and to this union two children were born, Ida May and William Henry, both preceding her in death. After the death of her husband in 1870, she lived with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Keim and with the family emigrated to Nebraska in May, 1880, settling on a farm near Bruning, Thayer County. On Nov. 28, 1880, she became the wife of Walter C. Bates of Carleton and a mother to his four young children. To this union were born four children, the youngest of whom, Earl C. Bates, is deceased. For over 40 years Mrs. Bates was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Carleton; faithful and active until infirmities would not longer permit. She courageously bore the sacrifices and hardships of the early settlers. In subsequent years, during her confinement to the home, she was patient and cheerful to the last. She leaves her husband, W. C. Bates, the children; Mrs. Stella Booth, Ft. Worth, Texas; Frank Bates, Hastings, Neb.; Harvey and Walter J. Bates, Carleton, Neb.; and Mrs. Mamie E. Smith of Blanca, Colo; two brothers, William Keim of Bloomington, Neb.; and Harrison Keim, of Bruning, Neb.; a sister, Mrs. Savilla Bender of Imperial, Neb.; 37 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, besides many other relatives and friends.
