BAUER Dr. Bauer Dies of Heart Attack Prominent Optometrist With Offices in Somerset and Meyersdale Dr. Edwin S. Bauer, 42, Somerset and Meyersdale optometrist, was found dead in bed Wednesday morning in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Anderson of near Laughlintown. Dr. MacMurray, Westmoreland County coroner, attributed death to coronary occlusion and stated he believed Dr. Bauer had been dead four or five hours before his body was discovered. Dr. Bauer had started for Labrobe [sic] Tuesday evening, and not feeling well had stopped at the Anderson home. Mr. Anderson told the Somerset-American the doctor seemed to recover and seemed in good spirits when he retired about 11 Tuesday night, after having been persuaded to spend the night in Laughlintown before resuming his journey. He had been enroute to Latrobe to visit his mother, Mrs. C. H. Bauer, who has been in ill health for some time. Wednesday morning when Dr. Bauer failed to appear, Mr. Anderson went to his room and found him dead. Mrs. Bauer was immediately notified of the tragic death of her husband, and departed for Laughlintown. She returned to Somerset late in the afternoon. Dr. Edwin S. Bauer was the son of the late C. H. and Mrs. Bauer of Latrobe. His father, who had been an optometrist for many years in Latrobe, died in February of this year. His mother and a sister, Miss Alma Bauer, a teacher in the Latrobe schools, continued to reside in Latrobe. In Somerset Eight Years Dr. Bauer came to Somerset eight years ago, and first practiced in the Schell building. He later removed to the Casebeer building, following the death of Dr. A. J. Casebeer and contined his practice in the quarters formerly occupied by Dr. Casebeer. He also maintained an office in the Dia building in Meyersdale, having office hours here from 1 to 9 p.m. every Thursday. During the years in Somerset, Dr. Bauer made many friends and enjoyed a large practice. A number of years ago, he purchased the stone residence, which his family occupy on North Rosina Street, and made it one of the beauty spots of the town, with his knowledge of land-scaping and the beautiful flowers which filled the spacious yard throughout the summer months. Prior to coming to Somerset, Dr. Bauer worked with his father in Latrobe, for about ten years, and before that time both had practiced in Blairsville. He was born in Pittsburgh, and was a member of a Pittsburgh German Lutheran Church. He was also an active member of the Somerset Lions Club. Dr. Bauer was a graduate of Penn State optometrical college, and was one of the first graduates, following the opening of an optometrical department there. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Nell Gorr Bauer, two children, Joyce and Edwin Jr., his mother and sister, mentioned above. Funeral services under the direction of Charles R. Hauger will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 at the Hauger Funeral Home, the Rev. Dr. I. Hess Wagner of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Interment in Somerset County Memorial Park.
