BAUMAN The people of Northampton Township and surrounding communities were greatly shocked and saddened on Wednesday morning, January 21st, when the news spread that Elder Samuel J. Bauman had passed away. He had been ailing for some time, but his death was not expected. He had been bedfast for only about two weeks, with a heart ailment, and his condition was not considered serious. He was a son of Jehu and Elizabeth (Geiger) Bauman and was born November 1, 1866 in Northampton Township, and spent his life in the home where he died. He was aged 75 years, 2 months and 20 days. He was baptized in infancy by Rev. William Rupp, then pastor of the Berlin Charge, was confirmed in the Mt. Lebanon Reformed Church on May 23, 1885, together with his sister Alice A. Bauman and Ida M. Brant by Rev. C. H. Reiter. He remained a faithful and regular member of that congregation for more than 56 years. During the years of his connection with the Mt. Lebanon congregation he served as trustee, deacon, and elder. He also represented his charge on the floor of Synod and Classis. He took an active interest in all the work of the Church, and gave it his loyal support wherever he could. On December 11, 1890, he married Miss Sarah J. Martz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Noah Martz of Southampton Township. To this union were born three daughters and one son. He is survived by his wife, and the following children: Mrs. Melvin Close, Alverton; Mrs. Thomas E. Poorbaugh, and Miss Nellie Bauman, at home. The son preceded him in death. He is also survived by one brother, Gideon J. Bauman, and one sister, Miss Susan Bauman, both of Glencoe. Another sister, Mrs. Alice Amanda (Bauman) Poorbaugh, passed away in Northampton Township in April, 1940. He was very prominent in the affairs of the community in which he lived, having served his township in most of its offices. His place in the affairs of his church and community will be hard to fill. Services were held in the Mt. Lebanon Evangelical and Reformed Church on Saturday at 2 p.m. in charge of the pastor, Rev. J. E. Gindlesperger, with interment in the cemetery adjoining.
