Baumgardner, 71, of 1700 Baumgardner Ave., passed away at 7:05 p.m. Sept. 12 at Windber Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born April 21, 1903 in the village of Ogletown, Somerset County and was the son of Josiah and Amanda (Horner) Baumgardner. He married the former Anna Seese on March 10, 1921. The couple resided in Ogletown until 1945 when they purchased the former Berkey farm and moved to Windber. In addition to his widow, he is survived by seven children: Vera, married to William Davis of Windber; Annabelle, married to Mervin Whitaker of Windber; Lewis Jr., at home; Evelyn, married to Robert Varner of Ebensburg RD 1; Glenn, married to Mary Louise Shank of Lansing, Mich.; and 13 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren: Cynthia Baumgardner, daughter of Glenn and Mary Louise Baumgardner; and Jay Robert Weaver, son of Robert and Fern Weaver. Baumgardner was a former Somerset County Commissioner of the Somerset County Republican Party. He began his early career with the State Department of Highways in 1920 and operated a sawmill and stone quarry in the area of Ogletown and Central City. In 1935 he formed the Baumgardner Resurfacing Co., which paved many of the rural roads in Cambria, Somerset and Bedford counties. As president of the Ogletown School Board, he helped form the Ogle Township Consolidated School Board. In 1945, he founded Baumgardner Motors Inc. and opened an American Service Station in Windber. In 1952 he formed Capitol Road Surfacing and Materials Co. in Harrisburg. He began Baumgardner Petroleum Co. in 1953. The company was one of the first in the nation to reclaim waste oils for fuel oil. He developed a section of Windber known as Baumgardner Heights. He was active in state politics and in 1962 he resigned from the County Commission to serve as Superintendent of Highways for Somerset County. He retired in 1968. He was a charter member of the Rural Electric Cooperative of Somerset County; a charter member of the Windber Rotary Club; a member of B.P.O. Elks Lodge 175; Windber Fire Co.; Windber Sportsman's Association and Ogletown United Brethren Church. Funeral services will be held today at 10:30 at the Meek Funeral Home, Windber with the Rev. J.
