Beachy was born Dec. 19, 1907, near Salisbury, and died March 20, 2006, in the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Lucy and Alva Maust, Accident, Md., at the age of 98 years and three months. He is son of Daniel and Amanda (Miller) Beachy. On October 1, 1931, he was married to Verda Bender with whom he shared his life for 69 years. He is preceded in death by his wife, Verda, who died Feb. 10, 2001; son-in-law Edward Yoder; grandchildren, Vivian, Rodney and Audrey Maust; step granddaughter, Cynthia Yoder; and step great-grand-daughter, Marci Deal. He is also preceded by his parents; five brothers, Norman, Joe, Samuel, Eli and Alvin; and by five sisters, Cora Hershberger, Lucy Smoker, Elizabeth Miller, Tillie Miller and Salome Nafziger. Simon was the last surviving member of his generation of 152 cousins. He is survived by daughters, Hilda (Mrs. Ivan J. Maust), Grantsville, Md.; Ada (Mrs. Evan L. Maust), Salisbury; Esther B. Yoder, Grantsville; and Lucy (Mrs. Alva Maust), Accident. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grand-daughters. He is also survived by nine step-grandchildren, 32 step-great-grandchildren and two step-great-great-grandchildren. In his youth he accepted Christ as his personal Savior and was baptized in the Amish Church in Norfolk, Va. In early adulthood he transferred his membership to the Maple Glen Mennonite Church, Grantsville, and was later ordained as deacon in which capacity he served from 1946 to 1984. When Simon was 3 years old, the family moved to Norfolk. Two years later, his father died and by 1926 the family had all left Virginia and Simon moved back to the Salisbury area. Simon was very active in the life and work of the church and his community. He served for many years on the board of directors of the Goodwill Mennonite Home and various other church functions. After retiring from farming, Simon did custom field work and refrigeration for many years. He was very creative in inventing ways to improve his machinery and household items. Simon was a man known for his integrity and ability to get along with people. He easily developed friendships with people of all ages and had a special spot in his heart for children and they in turn loved him. But above all, he loved his Lord and that was evident in every facet of his life. Simon lived a long, full life and his longing to "Go Home" has now been realized. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville. A service will be will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Maple Glen Mennonite Church. The Rev. Phil Moser, the Rev. Jesse Yoder and the Rev. Ivan Maust officiating.
