He was born Feb. 21, 1865, in Jefferson Township, the son of Phillip and Lucinda (Hemminger) Beck. He received his education in the public schools in Berlin and Somerset. He taught 12 terms in the public schools of the county, afterwards taking up farming, which occupation he followed for the greater part of his life, until 15 years ago when he retired and came to Meyersdale to make his home. Mr. Beck was united in marriage to Amanda Ellen Mason, who survives him. He is also survived by four children: Mrs. Hattie Schrock, Meyersdale; Mrs. Harvey Crum, Canton, Ohio; Edward Beck, Meyersdale, R.D., and Mrs. Harold Walker, Garrett, R.D., and also by eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. On coming to Meyersdale he connected with Zion Lutheran Church, and for about 12 years was sexton of the church, until quite recently when he was forced to resign on account of ill health. Funeral services were held this (Thursday) afternoon at 2:30 at the home, his pastor, Dr. R. M. Dunkelberger, officiating. Burial was made in Union Cemetery under the direction of H. R. Konhaus.
