Miss Bender was born Jan. 22, 1907, at Springs, daughter of John H. Bender and Lydia (Miller) Bender. She began a career as an elementary teacher in 1926 which she continued until her retirement in 1969, touching the lives of many children in Somerset County. She taught in Elk Lick Township, Shade Township, and in Somerset Borough. Hers was a life of continuing education both formal and through travel. She took courses through California State Teachers College, Elizabethtown College, University of Pittsburgh and Juniata College, graduating from Juniata in 1936. Miss Bender maintained a residence with her father in Springs during most of her career and was a member of the Springs Mennonite Church. She was a Sunday School teacher and song leader there many years. Miss Bender was an interested and loving aunt to the many nieces and nephews of the Bender family. Surviving is one sister, Marie B. Haning of Springs. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, Md., where services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, with the Rev. Earl Yoder officiating. Interment, Springs Cemetery. There will be no visitation on Easter Sunday. Daily American, April 5, 1996 [B1054]
