He was born August 3, 1926, in Cumberland, son of the late Charles O. and Mabel (Custer) Bender. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Thomas Bender. Charles is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lois (Klink) Bender; one son, Richard C."Rick" Bender and wife Jo, Mount Savage, MD; two granddaughters: Tracy Shipley and husband Mark; Michael Trexler and husband Matt; one great granddaughter, Synthy Trexler; two brothers: Joseph Bender, Springs; William Bender, Grantsville, MD; and one sister, Ann Corderman, Hagerstown, MD. Mr. Bender graduated from Grantsville High School in 1942 and attended Penn Commercial College, Washington, and later the University of Maryland, College Park, where he received a bachelor's degree in public administration with concentration in finance in 1950. Mr. Bender was a U.S. Army/Air Force veteran of WW II, having served with the 5th Regiment Army. Bus has served as adjutant and finance officer of Grantsville Post 214, American Legion. He was named Mountain District Commander for the Legion. On the state level, he has served as sergeant-at-arms, first, second and third vice commander and commander of the Department of Maryland, American Legion. He was given Honorary Life Membership in Post 214. Mr. Bender was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ where he held the office of treasurer. He served on the Board of Trustees for Garrett College for many years, and has held the office of president and secretary-treasurer for the Grantsville Rotary Club. He is also a member of Woodmen of the World, Lodge 41. Bus was financial manager and later co-owner of Casselman Motor Co. with his brothers, Tom and Bill. He also served as mayor of Grantsville from 1965 to 1969. In 1973, he was named chairman of the Garrett County Planning Commission and held the post for many years. Bus was also a volunteer fireman with the Grantsville Vol. Fire Dept. for more than 40 years. Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, MD, on Wednesday, February 27, 2008, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be conducted n the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jerry Rogers officiating. Interment will be in Grantsville Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be accorded by Grantsville Post 214, American Legion.
