Bender, 74, died of pulmonary fibrosis on May 29, 2005, at UCSD Medical Center, San Diego, Calif. He was born in Denver, Pa., on Nov. 4, 1930. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Rebecca Bender and brothers James and Richard Bender. He is survived by sons, Bradley Bender, Castle Rock, Wash., Curt Bender, San Diego, and Brett Bender, Imperial Beach, Calif.; grandson, Noah Bender; sister and brother-in-law, Joanne and William Regenhardt; sister, Barbara Koosed and brother-in-law Dr. Edward Koosed, sister-in-law Ann Bender; 11 nieces and nephews; many cousins and close friend and former wife, Patricia Bender. Graduate of Somerset High School and received a B.A. and Masters degrees in education from San Diego University. He served in the U.S. Army with a stint in Germany. During his life, he sold real estate, built residential properties and taught school. In 1976, he began a satisfying career as a family-in-crisis counselor and psychotherapist. As a creative outlet he designed and carved imaginative wood figures called California critters. Memorial service will be held at the First Universalist Unitarian Church, 4190 Front St., San Diego, CA, 92103 June 11. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Minister's Discretionary Fund which is used in time of crises in the community.
