George Blair Bender, 71, Friedens RD 2, went to be with the Lord on May 6, 1993, at Somerset Hospital. Born April 18, 1922, in Friedens, son of the late Melvin C. and Margaret (Coleman) Bender. Preceded in death by his first wife, the former Doris Eileen Phillips. Survived by his second wife, Evelyn (Sowers) Wright-Bender, and by a daughter, Mrs. George (Margaret Renee) "Bunny" Barta, Friedens RD 2; stepchildren: Mrs. Ron (Laura) Ingram, San Diego, Calif.; Mrs. Shaun (Debra) Akin, Placerville, Calif.; John W. Wright, Dayton, Ohio; Mrs. John (Jennifer) Flores, Mount Hermon, Calif.; and two grandchildren: Lorrie Sue Barta and Travis Blair Barta. Brother of William H. Bender, Somerset, and Mrs. Frances Younkin, State College. 1939 graduate of Somerset Township High School. Graduate of Long Island University. Attended Michigan State University School of Law. U.S. Navy aviator, serving in World War II, Korean War, Cuban Crisis and Vietnam War. He received 12 citations and medals for valor and meritorious service. Member of Friedens Lutheran Church, VFW Post 554, Retired Officers Association, and was active in United We Stand America. Friends received from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Friedens Lutheran Church, with the Rev. James R. Ling officiating. Viewing at the church from 2 p.m. until time of service. Interment, Friedens Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be accorded by U.S. Navy Reserve, Ebensburg, and the Vietnam War Vets of Somerset County. Daily American, May 7, 1993 [B1070]
