Bender, 79, of Somerset, died Sept. 27, 2002 at home. Born Aug. 31, 1923 in Chambersburg, a son of Charles Samuel and Sarah Grace Hoover Bender. Preceded in death by parents; wife Beverly McNaul; son, Dr. Bruce Bender; sisters Eleanor Baldwin, Marian Oliver, and brothers, Frank Bender, Dr. William Bender and Charles Bender. Survived by wife, Patricia McNaul Bender and children, Cynthia Bender of Ocean City, New Jersey, Dr. John Bender and Jane Bender Moor of Lafayette, Colo.; stepchildren, Susan Cober of Morgantown, W.Va., Gayle Miller and John E. McNaul of Somerset and James McNaul of Attica, Ind.; 7 grandchildren and 5 step grandchildren. George was a member of the Second Lutheran Church of Chambersburg. He graduated from Chambersburg High School, attended Gettysburg College, graduate of Pennsylvania State College in 1947, received a medical degree in 1952 from Temple University and a masters in Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh in 1960. Received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with clusters as a pilot in the 718th Bombardment Squadron of the 449th Bombard Group of the 15th Air Force of the Army Corps from 1943 to 1945 with 35 missions. General practice of medicine in Chambersburg, Pa. University; physician at Pennsylvania State University; Health Commissioner, Cattarugus County, N.Y.; County Health director, Chester County, Pa.; physician, Altoona Veterans Administration Hospital and chief medical officer, Out Patient Clinic, Wilkes Barre Hospital. Retired in 1988. Professional Memberships and Societies include: AMA, AAS, APHA, NYSPHA, and American College of Preventive Medicine. Arrangements by Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home. Body donated to Humanity Gifts Registry for medical and research and education. No viewing or visitation. Burial will be at the convenience of family members in State College, Pa.
