Bender, 78, Jennerstown, died Aug. 26, 2006, at Select Specialty Hospital, Johnstown. Born Feb. 2, 1928, in Meyersdale, daughter of William and Florence Stevanus. Preceded in death by parents, infant daughter, Diane and five brothers. Survived by her husband, Leo Bender Jr., with whom she celebrated 61 years of marriage May 5; children, Grace Gindlesperger and husband, Larry, Jennerstown, Betty Rhoads and husband, John, Jennerstown, Lois Drenning and husband, James, Hooversville, and Leo Bender III, Jennerstown; grandchildren, Chuck and Mike Custer, Johnette Bambling, Shawna Steele and Dusty Rhoads, James and Tommy Drenning, Bill and Evan Bender, Stacy Burkett; and 17 great-grandchildren. Member of the Ladies Fellowship Quilters of the Hooversville Church of the Brethren. She enjoyed cooking for her husband, quilting, sewing and baking special cakes for friends and family. Grace's wishes were to have her body donated to science, which has been to the University of Pittsburgh, and to have a gathering of friends and relatives at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Coal Miner's Cafe in Jennerstown for a celebration of her life. A special thank you to Rev. Eash, Rev. Forry, Pastor Chuck and Pastor Barry. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jennerstown Volunteer Fire Department, which has taken superior care of her over the past year.
