While his death was not entirely unexpected, nevertheless it came as a distinct shock to his family and friends here. Mr. Bender was well known throughout this entire section as one of Grantsville's leading merchants. He operated a general store here for thirty six years. He disposed of this establishment however, in 1935, and retired from active business. For many years he took an active interest in the civic affairs of his community. He was a leader in the business affairs of the town and was considered one of its most substantial citizens. Mr. Bender was one of the organizers of the First State Bank of Grantsville and served as vice-president until 1926. At that time he became president of the institution, which office he held until 1931. He also served several terms as a member of the town council. Mr. Bender was born at Grantsville February 12, 1864, the second of nine children of John and Elizabeth Otto Bender. Practically his entire life had been spent in this community. He was twice married. His first wife was Miss Carrie Eva Fogle, who died March 10, 1916. Of this marriage six children were born, of whom one son, Raymond, died in 1925. The others, who survive, are Mrs. Edna B. Keller, Grantsville; Allen J. Bender, Cumberland; Otto D. Bender, Chicago; Harry J. Bender and Clyde F. Bender, Grantsville. On April 7, 1917, he married Miss Ida Rebecca Gautt, who died April 18, 1926. There were no children of this union. Bender, Springs, Pa.; Charles A. Bender, Grantsville and C. Edward Bender, Columbiana, O. Mr. Bender had been a member of the Mennonite church since early boyhood. A large crowd of relatives and friends attended the funeral services which were held at the Grantsville Methodist Church at 10:30 o'clock Wednesday morning, March 19. The Rev. Roy Otto, pastor of the Springs Mennonite Church, officiated and was assisted by Rev. Virgil R. Gillum, pastor of the Grantsville Methodist Church.
