Bender, 55, died in a plane crash Nov. 7, 1977 in Emmitsburg, Md. He was a native of Lancaster Co. He is survived by a granddaughter, Jennifer and two daughters, Janet of Somerset and Virginia Charley, Greensburg; his mother, Rebecca, San Diego; two sisters, Joanne Regenhardt, San Diego, and Barbara Koosed, Akron; two brothers, Donald, San Diego, and Richard, Somerset. James Bender had left Somerset in 1973, after spending 25 years in the area. He was president of the Bender Shoe Co. and along with his wife operated the Old Farm Restaurant. While a Somerset resident he was president of the Somerset Rotary Club. He was a flight instructor at the Somerset County Airport. He graduated from Wooster College, Ohio. He was a Marine fighter pilot in World War II and was awarded the distinguished flying cross with two oak leaf clusters. He also served in the Marine Air Corp during the Korean War and attained the rank of major. Memorial services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Christ Chapel, Gettysburg College, Gettysburg.
