  John R. Bender, 76, Berlin, died Nov. 29, 2006, in Berlin. Born July 17,
  1930, in Berlin, a son of John and Edythe (Musser) Bender. Preceded in death
  by parents; son, James; brother, Maynard; and sisters, Beatrice, Mildred, 
  Genevieve, Eleanor and Irene. Survived by his wife of 58 years, the former
  Janet Wilhelm; children, Joyce, married to David Meese, and Jacqueline,
  married to Craig Bowman, all of Berlin; and Jane, married to Robert Hondal,
  Burlington, Vt.; and grandchildren, Greta, married to Mike Durst; Benjamin 
  Meese, married to the former Heather Cigich; Ella Meese; Michael and Katie
  Bowman; and Mary and Julia Hondal. Also survived by a sister-in-law, Marie
  Bender, Berlin, and numerous nieces and nephews. A 1948 graduate of Berlin
  Brothersvalley High School. Retired from Briggs Industries, Somerset, and a 
  former Gold Card PIAA Basketball official for 21 years. Member of Holy 
  Trinity Lutheran Church, Berlin, where he had served on the church council,
  Berlin Sportsman's Association, NRA, TPA of Johnstown, Berlin Adult Day Care
  and Berlin Historical Society. He was an avid sports fan and devoted
  grandfather. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday
  at Deaner Funeral Home, Berlin, where a service will be held at 11 a.m.
  Saturday. The Rev. Dr. John Harmon and the Rev. Ralph Landis officiating.
  Interment Berlin IOOF Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Holy
  Trinity Lutheran Church, 525 Main St., Berlin, PA 15530.
