Benns, 50, of Confluence died Sunday, July 6, 1997, at his home. Born Oct. 20, 1946, in Columbia, S.C. A son of William E. Benns Jr. of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Barbara (Brady) Benns of Washington, D.C. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, the former Anna Marie Yakubisin; a son, David C. Benns, Charleston, W.Va., and a daughter, Amy M. Benns, Virginia Beach, Va. Also two brothers, William E. Benns III of Virginia Beach and Michael J. Benns of Knoxville, Tenn., and a sister, Patricia Komorowski of Albuquerque, N.M. Owned and operated River's Edge Cafe in Confluence and was vice president of Confluence Borough Council. Over the years he owned or co-owned various radio stations in Chattanooga and Knoxville, Tenn.; Norfolk, Va.; Pittsburgh, Pa., and Charleston, W. Va. Graduated from Georgia Tech University in Atlanta, Ga., in 1972 with a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering. Member of Phi Eta Sigma fraternity and Phi Kappa Phi honor society. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at River's Edge Cafe with Rev. Msgr. Samuel Tomaselli officiating.
