Born Aug. 20, 1918, in Lincoln Township, Somerset County a son of Samuel Milton and Valeria Ann (Miller) Berkey. Preceded in death by parents, brothers, Cloyd and Telford Berkey, and sister Mary Berkey. Survived by wife, the former Pauline Sayler to whom he married Dec. 24, 1944; children: Mrs. Barbara J. Richmond of Somerset, Samuel S. Berkey, married to the former Karen Rehar of Somerset, John C. Berkey of Somerset, Mrs. Thomas G. (Gretchen V.) Baraniak of Somerset, George Berkey, married to the former Marilyn Rouse of Corning, N.Y., Mrs. Michael (Rebecca P.) Ludlow of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; grandchildren: Ashley Richmond of Hooversville, Lindi, Leanne and Ryan Berkey all of Somerset, Ann Baraniak of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Alison Baraniak of Clemson, S.C., Emily and Erin Berkey, both of New York, N.Y., Adam and Tyler Berkey both of Corning. N.Y.; great-granddaughter, Ada Marie Skradski. Brother of: Mrs. Margaret Shaffer, Mrs. Irene Barnett, Mrs. Anna Maurer, Levi M. Berkey and wife Mildred and Harold Berkey, all of Somerset. Member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Somerset. A 1937 graduate of Somerset High School. Retired Lincoln Township dairy farmer. He had also worked in the Baltimore Shipyards during World War II. Also member of Somerset Grange, Sipesville Lions club, Somerset Sportsmans Assn. Was formerly a member for the Somerset school board for 11 years. He was a very accomplished woodworker and avid hunter and fisherman. Friends received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home where service will be conducted 10 a.m. Friday with the Rev. Dr. Herbert R. Hicks officiating.
