Berkey, 86, of Somerset died July 10, 2000 at Somerset Hospital. Born Feb. 26, 1914 in Somerset Township, she is the daughter of the late Joseph F. and Stella G. (Friedline) Stern. Also preceded in death by husband, Gilbert "Red" Berkey, daughter, Nancy Alverda, son Jackson A. Berkey, three grandchildren, a great-granddaughter, brothers: Jacob, Edmond, Ross and Paul Stern, and sisters: Melda Phillippi, Nancy Brier and infant sisters, Bessie and Ruth. Survived by children: Mrs. Richard E. (Lois) Swank, Emma Jean Barron, widow of Harry K. Barron, Rev. Sherman H. Berkey and wife Linda, Jerry S. Berkey and wife Mona, all of Somerset, Robert W. Berkey and wife Nacy, of Arvada, Colo. Sixteen grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren. Brother of Harry E. Stern of Somerset, daughter-in-law Mrs. Jack (Janet) Berkey of Somerset and numerous nieces and nephews. Member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, Lavansville and its Singles Club. Also attended the Berlin Missionary Alliance church. She is a retired house keeper. Friends received from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Robert H. Halverson Funeral Home where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. Edward Ebersole and Rev. Sherman H. Berkey officiating. Interment, Lavansville Cemetery.
