Mildred was born June 14, 1914, in Somerset County, to Elmer D. and Laura (Speicher) Walker. She is preceded in death by her husband, Levi on Nov. 27, 2004; a son, John Andrew Berkey; and four sisters, Mary Walker, Ruth Sanner, Helen Cleeves and Marjorie Doncastor. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Chester Lee "Chet" and Kathryn Trnka Berkey, Eau Claire, Wis.; a daughter and son-in-law, Judith Ann and William Swartzmiller, Mansfield; five grand-children and their spouses, Christopher Lee Berkey, Benjamin and Holly Berkey, Chad A. and Kim Swartzmiller, Joseph and Kristin Swartzmiller and Scott Swartzmiller; five great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Cory, Sofie, Jacob and Emma Swartzmiller; and a brother, Samuel Walker, West Chester. Graduated from Somerset High School with the class of 1935, and University of Pittsburgh with a BA in Education. In 2004, she moved to Mansfield to be closer to her family, after her husband's death. On Dec. 24, 1939, she married Levi Miller Berkey and together they operated their family dairy farm. Mildred also did substitute teaching for many years. She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Somerset and was very involved in various church activities, including the church women's organizations. She was a member of Fort Knightly and the Pennsylvania Farmer's Association. Mildred was a great cook, and was known for her wonderful and generous hospitality, having served many delicious meals for her family and guests. She also opened her home for lodging for people on mission trips. She enjoyed piecing quilts together for her children and grandchildren. Every stitch was sewn with love! Mildred was the hub of the family ... "she centered us and kept us together." More than anything else, Mildred loved her family. A memorial service will be held noon Saturday in St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 202 W. Union St., Somerset. The Rev. Matt Deal officiating. The family will receive friends one half hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Edie Cemetery. Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home is serving the family.
