Berkey, 73, of Berkey Road, Boswell RD, died Sept. 8, 1997, at home. Born Sept. 25, 1923, in Jenner Township. Son of Ernest and Jennie (Glessner) Berkey. Preceded in death by parents and brother, Donald. Survived by wife, the former Louise "Kitty" Spiker; sons, Robert R., married to Deanna Sue Barnick; and David L. married to Tina Ra Sturtz, both of Boswell RD, and five grandchildren: Lori, Jodi, Brad, Kevin and Denise Berkey. Member of Jenner Township Baptist Church, where he was head trustee for approximately 35 years and cemetery trustee for many years. Also member of the Cambria Lodge 278, F.& A.M.; Jaffa Temple and the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, both of Altoona; and the Old Time Fiddlers Association. Avid camper and loved Bluegrass music. Democratic committeeman in Jenner Township for many years. Last member of his immediate family. Founder of Berkey Excavating, Boswell RD, now operated by his sons. Observed 49th wedding anniversary on July 31, 1997. Army veteran of World War II. Friends received from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Hoffman Funeral Home, Main Street, Boswell, where service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, the Rev. Curtis Hamel and the Rev. Edward Heist officiating. Interment, Jenner Township Baptist Cemetery. Masonic service at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Daily American, September 9, 1997 [B1311]
