Dr. 08/08/07 Daily American Dr. Lawrence L. Bertino, 73, Rockwood, passed on Aug. 7, 2007, at Somerset Hospital. Born May 21, 1934, in Rockwood. He is the son of the late Antonio and D o m e n i c a Bertino. He is also preceded in death by his sister, Minnie Bertino. He is survived by his son, Lawrence A. Bertino and beloved former wife and devoted friend, Lotti Bertino, both of Johnstown. He is a graduate of Rockwood Area High School, the University of Pittsburgh and the Philadelphia College of Optometry. Dr. Larry was a longtime optometrist in Rockwood, opening his practice in 1958 and retiring in 2003. Early in his career, he would see patients during the day and then work at the family grocery store in the evenings to give his mother and sister a break. He was a member of the Rockwood Rotary Club since 1958 and was a former president and treasurer of the club. He was a former member of the Rockwood Area School Board. He was an active member of the Talus Rock Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and belonged to the Rockwood Historical and Genealogical Society, which honored him as their 2007 Man of the Year. He was a member of the South Central Blind Association Board of Directors and was a board member and former treasurer of the Somerset County Hospital Authority Board of Directors. He was a member of Lodge 358 of the Free and Accepted Masons in Somerset and the Meyersdale Elks. He was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Rockwood where he was a past president of the Church Council and was active in the Bible Study Group. He loved to play golf both locally and around the country. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Miller Funeral Home, Rockwood. A service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at St. Luke's Church. Pastors Ardelle and George Mason officiating. Interment at Rockwood IOOF Cemetery.
