Betts, 87, of Hyndman RD 1, formerly of Cumberland, Md., died Sunday, May 14, 1989 at Mercy Hospital, Altoona. Born at Patterson Creek, W. Va., Jan. 15, 1902, he was the son of the late Theodore and Mary (Long) Valentine. He went to work in the coal mines at Klondike, Md., at the age of nine and was a coal miner for 33 years. He retired after 21 years at the Kelly-Springfield Tire Company plant in Cumberland and had attended the Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church in Hyndman. Survivors include his widow, Mary J. (Kearns) Betts; one stepson, Franklin R. Twigg, Hyndman RD 1; and one step-grandchild. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Friends were received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home where services were conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Ken L. Korns. Interment, Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland. The Republic, May 18, 1989 [B1375]
