Bird, 72, Davidsville, died suddenly Dec. 28, 2007, in Orlando, Fla. Born June 12, 1935, in Somerset, son of the late Clyde and Margaret (Weaver) Bird. Preceded in death by a brother, Robert. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Barbara (Poorbaugh) Bird; son, Gene and wife, Susan, Johnstown; daughters, Darlene, married to Joseph Shaffer, Hooversville; Robin, married to Eric Rome, Tunkhannock; and Melissa, married to Percy Hagenbuch, Howard; and grandchildren, Brandon and Andrea Bird, Shawn, Trisha and Joseph Shaffer, Colby, Erin and Leah Rome and Emily Hagenbuch; and great-grandchildren, Shawn D. and Jonathon Shaffer. Don was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, and will be missed dearly by all who knew him. He was a 1954 graduate of Johnstown High School and served briefly in the U.S. Navy Reserve. He was an entrepreneur who started several businesses in the greater Johnstown area, as the owner/operator of Bird Electric, and most recently, Bird Machine/Repair/Supply. He thoroughly enjoyed his work and his friendly, outgoing personality made it a joy and a blessing to everyone who came in contact with him. He was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church, Johnstown, where he faithfully served in any capacities he was needed, including being a Sunday School teacher. In 2006 he led the FUMC softball team to the league championship. He also was a member of the Conemaugh Township Rotary Club, where he received the Paul Harris Distinguished Fellow Award, and a 31-year perfect attendance award and also a member of the Johnstown Inter-service Group. He was a dedicated member of Windber Hospital Board of Directors, being instrumental in the progress of that facility. He enjoyed spending time at Indian Lake and Sebring, Fla., where he created many happy memories for his family and friends. He was a fan of sports cars and racing and enjoyed attending the Kruse Car Auctions and the 12 Hours of Sebring. Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Picking- Treece-Bennett Mortuary Inc., West Hills, 921 Menoher Blvd. Services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, Vine Street, Johnstown. The Rev. Dennis Zimmerman officiating. Interment Grandview Cemetery. In Don's memory, contributions may be directed to First United Methodist Church, or the Children's Diabetes Center at Windber Place
