BITTINGER The Grantsville Community was greatly shocked at the sudden death of Lawrence G. Bittinger, retired rural mail carrier of Grantsville, who died suddenly of a heart attack in Cumberland, Thursday, August 26. Born November 1, 1886, in Grantsville, he was the son of the late Thomas Henry and Elizabeth (Hoover) Bittinger. Surviving besides his wife, who was the former Miss Elizabeth Orendorf, are two daughters - Mrs. Woodrow (Alma) Weller of Grantsville, and Mrs. Roy (Edith) Herring of near Salisbury, Pa.; two sons, Rexford Bittinger, Grantsville, and Blaine Bittinger, Baltimore; four grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Anna Grady, Pierce, W.Va. Mr. and Mrs. Bittinger had been shopping in Cumberland and were returning home when he complained of the heat and said he could not drive. He stopped the car on Frederick Street before he lost consciousness. Mrs. Bittinger called for help and he was rushed to the Allegany Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:30 o'clock. Mr. Bittinger was the first rural mail carrier on the Route No. 1 west through the mountain district to the Pennsylvania state line, where he served from May 1, 1909 to November 30, 1946. He was well liked and was always ready to serve the public graciously. He had many friends in Grantsville and community where he spent his life. He was a charter member of the Grantsville Camp No. 41, Woodsmen of the World, a past Council Commander and present Banker of the camp. He also served on the Grantsville Town Council for one year, and was a member of the Grantsville Lutheran Church. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, August 29, at 5 o'clock at the home, where many friends paid their last respects. The Rev. S. D. Sigler of DuBois, Pa., a former pastor of the Lutheran Church, officiated. Mrs. Harry Hoover and Mrs. Harry Yommer rendered several favorite selections. The pallbearers were members of the W.O.W. Camp, Hobart Speicher, Henry Patton, C. O. Bender, Vernon Beachy, L. B. Schaefer and Ralph Glotfelty. Other members attended in a body. The floral offerings were many, showing the respect of his friends. Interment was made in the Grantsville Cemetery. Relatives who attended were Mrs. Annie Grady, Pierce, W.Va.; Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Alwood, Sharon, Pa.; Emerson Hays, Lisbon, O.; Mr. and Mrs. Spencer Graham, Oakland, Md.; Mr. and Mrs. Blaine Bittinger, Baltimore, Md.
