Ray was born on Jan. 8, 1944, in Meyersdale, the son of Edward and Thelma Bittinger. He married Joan C. Bittinger on Sept. 27, 1969. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; sisters, Freida and Joyce; and a brother, Larry. Surviving are three daughters, Kathleen (Kevin Esser) Bittinger, Silver Spring, Md.; Krista (Brian) Husemann, Dubuque, Iowa.; and Ann (Matthew) Scherr, Dubuque; eight grandchildren; sister, Margaret Baker, Boyton; and two brothers, Paul (Linda) Bittinger and Elwood (Darlene) Bittinger, both of Salisbury. Ray served in the U.S. Army Medical Corp. and worked as a registered nurse in Dubuque at Mercy Medical Center. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, Dubuque. A service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Nativity Church. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery with military rites accorded by American Legion Post 6.
