BITTNER The news of the sudden death of Mrs. Emma M. Bittner, Wednesday morning, Dec. 30, came as a sudden shock to her family and friends. Although she had been ill for many years, her condition seemed no worse than usual, when suddenly Wednesday morning she became very ill and died before help could be summoned. Mrs. Bittner was the daughter of Jacob and Harriet Poorbaugh of Northampton Township. She was born Aug. 25, 1866. She became a member of the Mt. Lebanon Reformed Church Nov. 14, 1880, under the jurisdiction of Rev. Lewis D. Steckel; later her membership was removed to the Glencoe Reformed Church. She was a faithful member of this denomination for fifty-one years. She was united in marriage to Benjamin F. Bittner of Glencoe, Nov. 14, 1889. To this union were born twelve children, nine of whom survive to mourn her loss: Nelson J., of Akron, Ohio; George H., of Connellsville; Howard R., of Mt. Savage, Md.; Foster L., of Ellerslie, Md.; Mrs. C. B. Bittner, of Glencoe; Mrs. S. W. Bittner, of Meyersdale, and Ruth, Hilda and Eugena, at home. She leaves also seventeen grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. E. E. Boger, of Hays Mill. Her husband preceded her to the grave by exactly five years. While she has gone away only to enjoy continued and deeper felicities of her immortal realities, there remains a vacancy in her home and community which cannot be filled. She was an esteemed, loving, sympathetic, congenial and devoted mother, deeply concerned as a home builder, always keenly interested in all her family responsibilities, discharging the same with fidelity. She was permeated with the spirit of love and this was shown wherever want or human needs were prevalent. She was always ready to render such aid as was within her power to give, even at times under heavy strain or at a sacrifice. She possessed sterling motherly qualities that were highly commendable and the loss of which will be the most keenly felt by her immediate family. Funeral services were conducted at Glencoe at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, by her pastor, Rev. J. E. Gindlesperger. Interment in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, in charge of Johnson & Son of Berlin.
