BITTNER Funeral services for Joseph L. Bittner, 77, a local coal operator, who died last Thursday night, Feb. 4, at his home in the Scratch Hill neighborhood near Meyersdale, were held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Beal, Beachley Street, Meyersdale. Rev. DeWitt L. Miller, pastor of the Church of the Brethren, of which he was a member, officiated. Interment was in Union Cemetery, directed by W. C. Price & Son. For many years Mr. Bittner and his sons operated a custom coal mine a few miles east of Meyersdale. He was an industrious citizen and good neighbor and family man. He was born September 16, 1865, a son of Peter J. and Mary (Keifer) Bittner. His wife, whose maiden name was Mary Belle Braucher, died 11 years ago. Surviving are nine children: Harvey W., John R. and Alva D. Bittner, Meyersdale R.D.; Joseph L. Bittner, Meyersdale; Mrs. Alverda Pugh, Meyersdale R.D.; Mrs. Luther Wedge, Masontown; Mrs. Charles Beal, Meyersdale; Mrs. Milton Johnson, Summit Mills, and Mrs. Ida Arnold, Meyersdale. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. Caroline Leazure, Meyersdale R.D.; 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Meyersdale Republican, February 11, 1943
